Get active in Purbeck this September

Free and low cost events are tempting people to get out and get active this autumn in Purbeck.

Following the success of the Purbeck Pledge alcohol reduction campaign in 2015, local people will be able to try a range of activities during the month of September.

Councillor Bill Pipe, Local Communities Portfolio Holder for Purbeck District Council, said: “We live in a fantastic part of the country, so the Purbeck Pledge 2016 will make the best use of Purbeck’s outstanding natural environment and offer the benefits which come from getting out and getting active.

“Lots of organisations have shown their commitment to the health of local people by supporting this year’s Pledge and we are extremely grateful to all of them.”

Dr Alastair Ward, Wareham Surgery, said: “Nature really lifts us up so there will be lots of opportunities to do something physical and get us out there this September! This is a fantastic way to do something great for our health, so take the Pledge, get up, get active and have fun in Purbeck!”

The free and low cost activities include Tai Chi and Qiqong, orienteering, horticulture, coasteering, mindfulness walks, cycling, Nordic walking, dinghy sailing, Morris dancing, snorkelling and lots more.

A launch event is taking place at Durlston Castle on Saturday 3 September. There will be an opportunity to find out more about the events and take part in some free activities on the day, including a Mindfulness and Nature Walks. Attendees can also have a go at orienteering and enjoy a treasure hunt challenge.

The free launch event takes place from 10am until 4pm on the 3rd (normal parking charges apply).

An online map showing all the events can be viewed at www.purbeckpledge.org.uk and paper copies of the map, produced by the IMS Group marketing agency, can also be found around the district.

Schools and workplaces are also getting in on the action by pledging to walk a mile for the Purbeck Pledge on Wednesday 14 September (or a day that suits them if that’s not convenient). Just tweet #Purbeckpledge16 to say what you’re doing.

There will also be some bargain activities at Purbeck Sports Centre’s £1 taster morning on Saturday 17 September. Attendees will be able to use the gym, have a swim, grab a racket or stretch in a pilates class, all for just £1! Booking required. Visit www.dorsetforyou.com/purbecksportscentre
